Question 1

What is an electromagnetic pulse as a superpower?

Accepted Answer

An electromagnetic pulse is the power to emit a surge of electromagnetic energy that disrupts all technology nearby. The fan catalogs file it as a sub-power of Electromagnetic Attacks and Electromagnetism Manipulation, and the pulse may come from the user's hands or their entire body.

Question 2

How is it different from an electric surge?

Accepted Answer

An electric surge is a sudden burst of raw charge that harms people as well as machines. An electromagnetic pulse is a wave of EM energy whose signature outcome is killing technology; it can leave people standing untouched in a dead city.

Question 3

How is it different from electric discharge?

Accepted Answer

Electric discharge is the release mechanism itself, fired as aimed zaps and arcs at specific targets. An EMP is an area wave, not an aimed bolt: it radiates outward and kills every unshielded device in range instead of striking one target.

Question 4

Can an EMP really happen in real life?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The 1962 Starfish Prime nuclear test knocked out electronics in Hawaii, 1,445 kilometres away, proving the long range of high-altitude EMP. Non-nuclear EMP devices also exist, using capacitor banks and flux compression generators, though at a fraction of the energy.

Question 5

What can stop or resist an EMP?

Accepted Answer

Faraday cages and Faraday shields block the pulse, military equipment is hardened against it, and older electronics with chunky circuits may survive where modern ones die. The power is also useless wherever there is no technology around.

Question 6

Who are famous electromagnetic pulse users in fiction?

Accepted Answer

The MUTOs (MonsterVerse), Sonic (Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog), Storm and Onslaught (Marvel Comics), Ted Sprague (Heroes), E.M. Pino (Edens Zero), the Thunder Twins (The Thundermans), Superman (My Adventures with Superman), Blackout and Soundwave (Transformers), and the Night Lights (Dragons: The Nine Realms), each as depicted in their own universe.
