Question 1

What is a solar beam as a superpower?

Accepted Answer

A solar beam is the power to project a beam of solar energy/substances gathered from the sun. The fan catalogs file it as Solar Beam Emission, a Sub-power of Solar Attacks and a Variation of Stellar Beam Emission, also called Heliokinetic Beam Emission or Sun Beam Emission. Users gain power from a source of solar energy/substances from a sun, concentrate it into a single point, and fire it as a beam of destructive force that can incinerate anything in its range.

Question 2

How is it different from heat vision?

Accepted Answer

Heat vision is one character's version of the solar beam: Superman's way of releasing large amounts of the solar energy stored in his cells through his eyes. A generic solar beam draws fresh sunlight from the sky and concentrates it; heat vision spends stored charge. Every heat vision is a solar beam, but not every solar beam comes from the eyes.

Question 3

How is it different from a solar flare?

Accepted Answer

A solar beam is focused; a solar flare is omnidirectional. The beam narrows sunlight into one line for precision strikes, while the flare vents solar energy in every direction at once, like Superman's New 52 Solar Flare that released all the solar energy in every one of his cells. The beam is the sniper; the flare is the bomb.

Question 4

Can real sunlight be focused into a weapon?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and France built one. The Odeillo solar furnace uses 63 heliostats to concentrate light onto a focal point, equivalent to 10,000 suns on a 40 cm target, reaching 3,500 C at one megawatt. The legend of Archimedes' heat ray at Syracuse (213-212 BC) shows the idea is ancient, even if historians doubt the story. Real focused sunlight can melt steel; a fictional beam user just carries the furnace inside.

Question 5

What are the limits of a solar beam user?

Accepted Answer

They may require solar energy from a source, so night, caves, and shade starve the power. Charging takes time, and an interrupted charge means no beam. They may not be immune to the effects of their own attacks, so a mirrored or reflected beam can hurt them. Photokinetic Immunity, Solar Immunity, and Solar Negation counter the power outright, and overuse may cause exhaustion or strain. Weather matters too: Pokemon's version loses 50 percent of its power in rain, hail, fog, or sandstorm.

Question 6

Who are famous solar beam users in fiction?

Accepted Answer

Superman (DC Comics, heat vision), Apollo (WildStorm), Sunfire (Marvel Comics), Venusaur and Lurantis (Pokemon), Amaterasumon (Digimon), Nuova Shenron (Dragon Ball GT), Escanor (The Seven Deadly Sins), Birdman (Hanna-Barbera), Captain Sunshine (The Venture Brothers), BoBoiBoy Solar, and Vaarsuvius (Order of the Stick), each as depicted in their own universe.
