Question 1

What is sleep manipulation as a superpower?

Accepted Answer

Sleep manipulation, also called hypnokinesis (or somnokinesis), is the power to control the sleep functions of oneself and others. The fan catalogs file it as a Sub-power of Consciousness State Manipulation and Mental Manipulation, and the opposite of Wakefulness Manipulation. Users can induce sleep instantly, tune sleep depth and stages, adjust circadian rhythms, force awakening, or deny sleep entirely, and they remain totally conscious during their own sleep.

Question 2

How is it different from dream manipulation?

Accepted Answer

Dream manipulation edits the dream: entering, shaping, and ruling dreamscapes. Sleep manipulation owns the sleep state around the dream: the on/off switch, the depth dial, the clock, and the alarm. The catalog files Dream Manipulation as a Sub-power of Sleep Manipulation, so the dream editor is the child and the sleep switchkeeper is the parent.

Question 3

How is it different from hypnosis or mind control?

Accepted Answer

Hypnosis and mind control work on the waking mind through suggestion and command. Sleep manipulation pushes or holds someone in a sleep state instead of seizing their waking behavior. A skilled user can pair soft suggestion with sleep onset, but the core of the power is slumber, not obedience.

Question 4

Can a sleep manipulator keep someone asleep forever?

Accepted Answer

In fiction, yes: the catalog lists Eternal Slumber Inducement, putting a subject to sleep forever in a comatose-like state, and the Healing Coma as a deliberate technique. Limits apply: the power may not work on insomniacs or those with sleep disorders, outside forces like alarms or pain can break induced sleep, and sustained use drains the user.

Question 5

What does real sleep science say about the power's levers?

Accepted Answer

The levers are real. Human sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles through N1, N2, N3, and REM; melatonin signals night and light suppresses it; the GABA flip-flop model governs sleep and wake switching; and waking from deep N3 sleep causes 30 to 60 minutes of sleep inertia. A hypnokinetic would be pulling levers that sleep science has already mapped.

Question 6

Who are famous sleep manipulators in fiction?

Accepted Answer

Hypnos (Greco-Roman mythology); Morpheus (Greek myth); Enmu (Demon Slayer); Sandman (Rise of the Guardians); Mantis (Marvel Cinematic Universe); Doctor Destiny (DC Comics); Professor X and Jean Grey (Marvel Comics); Saturn Girl (Legion); Zenitsu Agatsuma (Demon Slayer); Sian (Rave Master); Wesley Dodds, the golden-age Sandman; Clovis (Percy Jackson), each as depicted in their own universe.
